Many primary care physicians will recommend patients receive cancer screenings on a regular basis. In most cases, a prescription is needed from the primary care physician in order to receive a certain type of cancer screening (example: mammogram, colonoscopy, etc). It is also important to note that some primary care physicians can perform certain cancer screenings (example: pap tests and clinical breast exams). It is not always necessary to see a specialist for a cancer screening.
